Fueling Research & Innovation
BIMS Institute is a research, blue technology, and innovation powerhouse. We connect ocean science to coastal community, and coastal community to market-ready solutions, transforming the ocean's greatest challenges into jobs, products, and lasting resilience. Every project we run follows the same cycle, and every investment compounds across all of it.
At the BIMS Institute, research, community, and enterprise aren't separate programs, they're one connected cycle. We design our work around four beats, where science, skill, solutions, and sustainability each feed the next. It's how we believe a Blue Economy should actually work: circular, community-led, and built to last.
Through community BioBlitzes, we work alongside residents to collect eDNA samples, contribute to a growing biodiversity database, and turn scientific discovery into shared understanding. The data doesn't just tell us what's there, it tells us what's changing, and it points us to the problems worth solving.

BIMS Tech, Innovation & Research
|
A cycle fueled by technological innovation. We build the tools and platforms that move data, ideas, and opportunity across the whole cycle. From the ocean, to the community, to the market, and back again.

|
A community-first platform that connects coastal organizations to the data, jobs, funding, and policy information they need to act. Built for grassroots nonprofits, OJAI replaces static reports with interactive maps, embeddable job boards, funding databases, and AI-generated summaries of marine protected areas.
|
A centralized, community-driven platform to collect, organize, and share eDNA data for ocean conservation. Built for scientists and community partners alike, eDNAble turns environmental DNA samples into a living biodiversity database that informs research, conservation, and coastal decision-making.

Bloom to Business
Every year, millions of tons of sargassum seaweed wash onto Caribbean shores, smothering coral reefs, devastating tourism, and costing coastal economies millions in cleanup. In Belize, we're turning that challenge into a blueprint for what a circular Blue Economy actually looks like.
Through Bloom to Business, invasive sargassum becomes market-ready fertilizer, natural fiber, and sustainable textiles. Coastal residents become the workforce. Revenue becomes reinvestment. And environmental crisis becomes economic opportunity.
